The highly topical and relevant theme for the 2017 Congress is “Midwives - Making a Difference in the World”. We have reached a time when attention turns to ‘what next’ after the 2015 Millennium Development Goals. As new global initiatives are being developed, one strong message emerges from the 2011 and the 2014 State of World Midwifery Reports and that is ‘midwives do make a difference’ in saving the lives of women and newborns and promoting good health.
Proposals from the Canadian Association of Midwives have been welcomed by the ICM Board and the ICM Scientific and Professional Programme Committee (SPPC) and together they have proposed the following daily themes:
Midwives: Making a difference through leadership
Midwives: Making a difference through partnerships
Midwives: Making a difference through professionalism
Midwives: Making a difference through supporting women's and girls rights
And now, the distinguished members of SPPC will commence work to produce a set of guidelines, leading to an invitation for the submission of Abstracts. It is this highly skilled international group of midwives who will develop these themes within a topical and stimulating programmes to suit midwives from all backgrounds and experiences.
The unique framework of an ICM Congress offers a diverse range of activities including: traditional peer-reviewed papers, discussion around work in progress, symposia on innovative projects; collaboration with International Partners and plenary sessions with inspirational Keynote Speakers.
