      Get answers to all your questions on carbon management. This one-day course provides an overview of the science, technical and policy aspects of carbon capture and storage (CCS) and other carbon management tools. Taught by CMC’s theme leads and scientific directors, this overview course is a unique opportunity to hear from experts in the field, discuss and exchange ideas with other participants and gain more depth in your understanding of carbon management and the challenges involved in advancing CCS and carbon management as GHG mitigation strategies.

    The CCS Overview course will take place at Carleton University and is open to HQPs and industry participants. You do not need to register for the CMC 2012 Conference to attend this course. If you are interested in only attending one or both courses select the Pre & Post Course Only option on the Session page of the registration site. Space is limited.

    3) Carbon Pricing Mechanisms
    Climate change is an enormous global problem requiring more than technological innovation to fix. Political, economic, social and legal changes are all needed to foster the conditions for action and change. Members of this panel will discuss several policy alternatives that are available for reducing carbon emissions. Among the options examined will be a carbon tax, regulated emissions caps, and cap and trade programs.

      Organizational GHG Accounting (formerly GHG Quantifier) course

    Many organizations are starting to think about how to manage their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for a number of reasons: to minimize their impact on the planet, to prepare for regulation and address evolving disclosure requirements, to increase energy efficiency and/or to build their profile as an environmental leader.

    Building an inventory of your sources and emissions is an essential first step to assessing risks, reducing emissions and tracking performance.

    This training course will cover the basics of GHG accounting for organizations. The course materials are based on the WRI/WBCSD GHG Protocol Corporate Standard, while referring to the ISO 14064: Part 1 international standard for GHG inventories.
    A personal ISO 14064: Part 1 license is issued to each learner as part of this course.

    The material taught in this course serves as the basis for almost all of the entity-level GHG reporting programs in the world, such as:

    • U.S. EPA Climate Leaders
    • U.S. DOE/EIA 1605(b) program
    • The Climate Registry

    SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES

    Richard Adamson
    Managing Director
     

    For nearly three decades, Richard Adamson has been dedicated to facilitating the commercialization of innovative technologies. Prior to his appointment with CMC, Mr. Adamson played a pivotal role with the Southern Research Institute’s Environment and Energy team, resulting in the Carbon to Liquids (C2L) Development Centre in Durham, North Carolina. He has founded or worked with small and large technology companies in Alberta ranging from lab, environmental remote sensing, and industrial process control instruments through to small-scale combined heat and power systems for which he holds a patent, pioneering a distributed micro-utility business model. Mr. Adamson serves on the board of C3 (formerly Climate Change Central) and was founding chair of NewERA, the predecessor to WADE Canada. He has a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Calgary.

    Dr. Anita Arduini
    CMC Program Director

    Anita was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Institut de Chimie University Louis Pasteur (Strasbourg, France) and a Postdoctoral Fellow, Department of Chemistry, UBC. Over a 25-year span she held increasingly senior positions in the petrochemical industry, the last as a Technology Business Development Manager at NOVA Chemicals Corporation. In 2007, she joined the University of Calgary and held the position of Executive Director Research for the Schulich School of Engineering before joining Carbon Management Canada in 2011. She was a member of the Advisory Board of the National Research Council, Institute for Chemical Process and Environmental Technology and is a member of the review committee of the Albert Innovates Technology Futures Industry Funding Programs (R&D Associates, Commercialization Associates).

    Dr. Joule Bergerson, Phd
    Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering, University of Calgary
     

    Dr. Joule Bergerson’s primary research interests are systems-level analysis for policy and decision making of energy system investment and management. The focus of her work is developing frameworks for the assessment of prospective technology options and their policy implications from a life cycle perspective. To date, her work has addressed fossil fuel derived electricity, oil sands development and carbon capture and storage. Joule received her PhD in a joint program of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Engineering and Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University. She has a Masters of Engineering Degree in Chemical Engineering with a collaborative program in Environmental Engineering from the University of Toronto and an undergraduate degree in chemistry and environmental science from the University of Western Ontario. She has also worked as a technical systems analyst and a project manager for R&D projects at the Royal Bank of Canada in the Information Technology division.

    Dr. John Grace
    Canada Research Chair in Clean Energy Processes
    University of British Columbia

    Dr. John Grace began his career in 1968 as a faculty member at McGill University in Montreal. In 1979 he moved to the University of British Columbia in Vancouver where he served as Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering, Dean of Graduate Studies and Acting Director of the Clean Energy Research Centre. He spent a year working with SNC Inc. Dr. Grace has served as a consultant for various companies in Canada and abroad. He holds a Canada Research Chair and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, Canadian Academy of Engineering, Engineering Institute of Canada and Chemical Institute of Canada. He is the recipient of numerous awards including the R. S. Jane Award, the major award of the Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering, and the 2012 Montreal medal of the Chemical Institute of Canada. He has more than 500 publications, including seven books. Dr. Grace graduated from the University of Western Ontario with a Bachelor of Engineering Science degree and from the University of Cambridge with a Doctor of Philosophy degree.

    Dr. Erik Haites
    Margaree Consulting

    Dr. Haites has assisted the UNFCCC Secretariat on a variety of issues since 1998. He has also been a lead consultant for the Secretariat’s reports on Investment and Financial Flows to Address Climate Change and the recent Update of that report. Erik served as Head of the Technical Support Unit for Working Group III of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) for the Second Assessment Report. He was a Lead Author for both the Second and Third Assessment Reports and a Review Editor for the Fourth Assessment Report of Working Group III on policy measures. He has contributed to designs of greenhouse gas emissions trading programs for Australia (Inter-jurisdictional Working Group), Canada (National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy), the European Union (European Commission), the United Kingdom (International Petroleum Exchange) and the United States (Heinz Center). He participated in a study of the feasibility of multiple pollutant trading programs for Alberta. Dr. Haites participated in the PERT pilot program for NOx, VOC and greenhouse gas emissions trading in southern Ontario.

    Matt Horne
    Acting Director, Climate Change, Pembina Institute

    Matt has been with the Pembina Institute since 2003 and is currently the acting director of the Climate Change program and director of the B.C. Energy Solutions program. His focus is on policy change that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions in British Columbia and provide replicable models for the rest of Canada. In pursuit of this goal, he has worked on initiatives with the province, municipalities and First Nations. Prior to joining Pembina, Matt worked extensively with energy-economy models on projects attempting to estimate the costs and benefits of climate change policy in Canada. Matt holds a Bachelor of Engineering from Dalhousie University and a Master of Resource and Environmental Management from Simon Fraser University.

    Dr. Shi-Ling Hsu
    Professor, Faculty of Law, University of British Columbia

    Dr. Shi-Ling Hsu is a Professor of Law at the University of British Columbia Faculty of Law. He has also served as Associate Dean for Special Projects during his current appointment. Prior to his current appointment, Shi-Ling was an Associate Professor at the George Washington University Law School, a Senior Attorney and Economist for the Environmental Law Institute in Washington D.C, and a Deputy City Attorney for the City and County of San Francisco. After this summer, he will be a Professor at the Florida State University College of Law. Shi-Ling has a B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from Columbia University, and a J.D. from Columbia Law School. He also has an M.Sc. in Ecology and a PhD in Agricultural and Resource Economics, both from the University of California, Davis. Shi-Ling has taught in the areas of environmental and natural resource law, energy law, law and economics, quantitative methods, and property.

    Dr. Steve Larter, FRS
    Scientific Director, Carbon Management Canada
    Canada Research Chair and Professor of Petroleum Geology
    University of Calgary

    Dr. Larter is Canada Research Chair and Professor of Petroleum Geology at the University of Calgary. Prior to joining the University of Calgary in 2004, he worked for the Universities of Newcastle and Oslo and, in the 1980s, for Unocal in California. Dr. Larter has broad research interests which range from understanding the phenomenon of biodegradation and predicting fluid property variations in tar sand and heavy oil reservoirs; biogenic gas generation and shale gas and coupling fluid chemistry as part of reservoir simulator history matches; through to studying the microbial life of subsurface petroleum reservoirs. He is a member of the Norwegian Academy of Sciences, a Fellow of the Royal Society and AAPG distinguished lecturer. He is also CEO of Gushor Inc. and Scientific Director of Profero Energy, two technology companies developing transition technologies to enable society and the oil and gas industry to rapidly migrate to zero carbon emission practices. His degrees are from the universities of Cambridge and Newcastle.

    Dr. Don Lawton
    Canadian Society of Exploration Geophysicists Chair in Exploration Geophysics
    University of Calgary
     

    Dr. Don Lawton is a Professor of Geophysics and Chair in Exploration Geophysics in the Department of Geoscience at the University of Calgary. He previously served as Head of the Department from 1997 to 2002. His research interests include monitoring methods for the geological storage of CO2, seismic imaging and integrated geophysical and geological studies in complex geological settings. He is an Associate Director of the Consortium for Research in Elastic Wave Exploration Seismology (CREWES) and is the Theme Lead in Secure Carbon Storage for Carbon Management Canada, a $25M Network of Centres of Excellence. He is a past Editor of the Canadian Journal of Exploration Geophysics, and was a recipient of a Meritorious Service Award from the Canadian Society of Exploration Geophysicists (CSEG) in 1996 and the CSEG Medal in 2000.

    Stephen Leonard, PhD

    Steve Leonard is an experienced patent agent and technology entrepreneur with a strong background in the commercialization of new technologies. After earning his Ph.D. in physics from the University of Toronto in 2001, Steve went on to work at several startup companies in telecommunications, software and medical diagnostics. Steve has worked in numerous roles that include scientific research, product development, intellectual property management, business development, and strategy. Steve is a Registered US and Canadian Patent Agent at Hill and Schumacher in Toronto. Steve’s intellectual property practice includes drafting and prosecuting patent applications and advising academic institutions and innovative technology companies on patent strategy.

    Dr. Patrick Mann
    Director of Information Technology
    Carbon Management Canada

    Dr. Mann has a Doctorate in Computational Astrophysics from the University of Oxford, and has been a faculty member in Physics at Queen’s University and the University of Western Ontario. He maintains an adjunct status at the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC). In the Information Technology arena he has been a senior systems administrator, and was the Director of Computing and Telecommunications Services at UNBC before leaving to become CTO of Cybera Inc. Dr. Mann is President and CEO of SegHulen Inc., a small development and consulting company. Dr. Mann has been involved the Northern Medical Program in British Columbia, the Canadian Space Sciences Data Portal, the GeoCHRONOS earth-observation portal, and the GeoCENS Cyberinfrastructure for Environmental Sensing. He has collaborated with CANARIE, Canada’s advanced research and innovation network, on such projects as the Green Star Network aimed at reducing Carbon emissions from IT infrastructures.

    Senator Elaine McCoy

    Senator Elaine McCoy was appointed to the Senate of Canada by the Rt. Hon. Paul Martin on March 24, 2005. Senator McCoy is a lawyer and former Alberta cabinet minister with 30 years professional experience in regulation and policy development in both the private and public sectors. After completing a BA and LLB at the University of Alberta, Senator McCoy pursued a career in law as senior legal counsel for the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board and as counsel for TransAlta. Senator McCoy was asked by former Alberta Premier Peter Lougheed to run in Calgary West as his replacement upon his retirement from provincial politics; she won the seat in 1986. She was named to cabinet as Minister of Consumer and Corporate Affairs and Minister responsible for Women’s Issues by Don Getty. Senator McCoy was appointed as Alberta’s Minister of Labour and Minister responsible for human rights in 1989. She is President of the Macleod Institute and a past President of the Sir Winston Churchill Society and currently Vice Chair of Climate Change Central, a multi-stakeholder organization designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Alberta.

    Dr. James Meadowcroft

    Geoff Munro
    Chief Scientist and Assistant Deputy Minister
    Natural Resources Canada, Innovation and Energy Technology Sector

    Geoff Munro was appointed Chief Scientist and Assistant Deputy Minister of the newly formed Innovation and Energy Technology Sector at Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) in 2009. IETS is comprised of CanmetENERGY, the energy technology R&D arm of the Government of Canada, as well as the Strategic Science & Technology Branch. This appointment is in addition to his June 2007 appointment as NRCan’s Chief Scientist. Geoff co-chairs two federal interdepartmental committees on S&T: the ADM S&T Committee (which delivers the Federal S&T Strategy and provides high-level strategic direction); and the S&T Integration Board (which addresses and provides direction on issues relevant to federal science departments who perform science). Internationally, Geoff is the Canadian member of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Steering Committee of the International Panel for Sustainable Resource Management (Resource Panel) whose overall objective is to provide independent scientific assessment of the environmental impacts due to the use of resources over the full life cycle, and advise government and organizations on ways to reduce these impacts.

    As Vice President, Licensing, David Reese oversees Innovate Calgary’s licensing and commercialization activities while providing leadership to a team of licensing professionals. David has over 10 years of experience in technology commercialization. Prior to joining Innovate Calgary David gained valuable experience in the technology transfer space while working at Toronto’s University Health Network as a Senior Business Development Officer. He has also worked at university spin off companies from McGill University and Stanford University. David holds an MBA from the Schulich School of Business in Toronto, an M.Sc. in Biology from McGill University, and a B.Sc. in Pharmacology from the University of Alberta. He is currently a member of the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM) and the Licensing Executives Society (LES).

    Dr. Louis Rinfret
    Digital Media Strategy Lead
    Carbon Management Canada

    Dr. Louis Rinfret is Professor at the Departement des Sciences de la gestion of the Université du Québec a Trois-Rivieres and Digital Media Strategy Lead at Carbon Management Canada. In this role he advises CMC on the development of digital media programs including the Carbon Commons online collaboration platform. Prior to his academic career Louis worked internationally in the information and communications technology (ICT) sector for a decade. His responsibilities included product and competitive strategy, as well as business unit and alliances management. Louis holds a PhD in Strategy from Lancaster University in the UK, where he studied the performance of strategic alliances in the ICT sector. His current research addresses the stimulation of innovation within and across firms and industries, the performance of collaborative and open business strategies as well as new business models, in particular in the context of breakthrough ICT technologies.

    Dr. David Risk
    Department of Earth Sciences
    St. Francis Xavier University

    David is an energetic, Discovery Award-winning young scientist. He is interested in four types of projects related to soil gases and carbon: Isotope applications development, Instrument development, Scaling issues in soil carbon, and Soil carbon/respiration in changing environments. He also started a successful spinoff company, Forerunner Research, with the assistance of some of his graduate students. The company’s main proprietary technology is an ultra-low power CO2 detection instrument developed at StFX. It has oil and gas applications, and large potential in government and ecological monitoring.

    Dr. John Shaw
    Professor and NSERC Industrial Research Chair in Petroleum Thermodynamics 
    University of Alberta
     

    Dr. John M. Shaw is a specialist in the phase behavior, transport and thermophysiochemical properties of mixtures from coal liquids, heavy oils and condensate rich reservoir fluids to pure compounds. He is an associate editor of Energy and Fuels, sits on the Network Coordination Council for the Canadian Oilsands Network of Research and Development (CONRAD) and is a theme leader for Carbon Management Canada (a Canadian national centre of excellence). He has held visiting scientist/professor positions at the Technical University of Delft (Delft, The Netherlands), the Institut Francais du Petrole (Rueil-Malmaison, France), the Syncrude Canada Research Centre (Edmonton, Canada), the ITESM campus of the Technical University of Monterrey (Guadalajara, Mexico) and is now visiting the TOTAL Research Centre and UPPA (Pau, France). Dr. Shaw obtained his B.A. Sc. (1981) and PhD. (1985) at the University of British Columbia and served as professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry at the University of Toronto before joining the University of Alberta in 2001.

    During his career in technology investment, Rick has led initiatives in product development, and managed several advanced technology investment programs. He has initiated several patents on these technologies, which are in production today. Rick has personally launched, and helped to build and transition, four start-up companies. He has been consistently recognized as a motivational leader, holding executive positions in engineering, business development and venture investment for companies including BCE Capital, Everest Partners, Nortel Networks, APN, West Carleton Meeting Centre, and AirShare. Rick has a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Sciences from the University of Waterloo with an option in Management Science.

    Payment:

    All fees are in Canadian dollars (CAD). Our secure server will process MasterCard, Visa, and American Express. Charges on your credit card statement will appear as ADVANCE GROUP. Only credit card payments are accepted.

    Cancellation & Refund Policy:

    Please note that all CMC 2012 Conference Registration fees are subject to the Cancellation & Refund Conditions below:

    • For cancellations and/or modifications that must be submitted in writing to the CMC 2012 Secretariat, contact cmcreg@advance-group.com

    CANCELLATION NOTIFICATION & REFUNDS
    (For paid Full Registrations)

    Notification by 5:00 PM PT May 4, 2012 - A refund will be granted less a $75.00 CAD cancellation fee per registration.
    Notifications received after 5:00 PM PT May 4, 2012 are 100% non-refundable.

    For Day Registration and Pre & Post Sessions Only - Non-Refundable.

    CHANGES / MODIFICATION / NAME SUBSTITUTION

    • Participants may make changes online at any time by accessing their CMC 2012 Registration Profile link in their email confirmation.
    • An alternate attendee name may be substituted if you are unable to attend the Conference. You can do this by logging into your CMC 2012 Registration Profile and substituting the relevant information. 

    RE-VERIFICATION OR REPROCESSING OF A CREDIT CARD

    • Credit card payments that require reprocessing for any reason will incur a $75.00 CAD administrative fee.
